REST with Alyssa Campo
"The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation," Kate Chopin writes in The Awakening.
In this interview, dreamweaver Alyssa Campo describes how she works with water, wind, fire, and earth to go inward. She also explains that the breath can help us cross the bridge from resistance and stress to rest and peace.
Alyssa, who creates one-of-a-kind, handmade 7 Chakra Dreamcatchers (in addition to many other original, beautiful designs), illustrates the role her throat chakra played during postpartum. Plus, she shares a sweet way we can think about our self-care practices and her favorite sweet treat.
WHAT ARE YOUR RITUALS TO RELAX, REJUVENATE, AND RESTORE YOURSELF?
My favorite way to relax and restore is to call in and work with the four elements- Earth, Water, Fire and Air. I’ll lay a crystal I’m feeling drawn to on my belly or third eye and sit with it, listening and allowing myself to receive the Earth Medicine. To honor the sacred Waters, I bless my drinking water with a simple prayer, “Thank you, I love you.” I light my Sage or Palo Santo and visualize the flame burning away any lower energies in or around me, clearing the air with the smoke and wind from outside. And also I have to include, raw chocolate – that’s my favorite!
What is your advice to empower women to make time for (guilt-free) rest?
Think of your self-care practices (big and small) as the Nectar that keeps the hive (your family, relationships and creative flow) alive and vibrant – nourishing everything it touches and healing you at the Source. Rest is an absolute must; it is our sacred time to connect – without effort – to our Higher Selves and Greater Purpose.
Please describe a time when you had to surrender to rest.
To describe a time when I had to surrender to rest, I think back to those tender first weeks of postpartum with each of my boys. Being in my vulnerability (physically, mentally, emotionally) and using my throat chakra to ask for help, for more love and support, was my biggest reflection into how willing and open I was to receive. I was a lot less open than I thought! Surrendering, now, feels like saying YES to ease.
How do you tune into your body's wisdom to know when to rest?
To tune into my body’s wisdom, I first address the mental plane – “focus on our breath for the next little while, it’s time to listen.” If I can close my eyes for a second, I will, to really go inward. I’ll take a deep breath, and create a break – or a bridge, really – from the emotion of resistance/stress to rest/peace. It’s amazing what happens when we allow an emotion to move through us and see how quickly the body responds!
