REST with Ayesha Ophelia
How do you want to show up in the world? In order to do so, regardless of the answer, self-care should be prioritized. In this interview, Ayesha Ophelia of The Girlfriend Manifesto explains why.
She's a ray of sunshine with an obvious passion for helping people. Here, she helps us shine by sharing her relaxation rituals (including her new favorite) and the subtle cues her body sends when she's out of alignment. As you'll see, sometimes the answer to what our bodies are asking is as simple as sisterhood, going sans screens, or sunshine.
WHAT ARE YOUR RITUALS TO RELAX, REJUVENATE, AND RESTORE YOURSELF?
My rituals around relaxation are often to do with quiet time, water, or soothing music. I enjoy picking a tarot or oracle card and then sitting quietly to see what messages come. Ritual baths are my new favorite thing. I will intuitively decide what needs to be in the water, which can look like crystals, herbs, or flowers. Depending on the mood, classical or some type of mantra music always helps me relax.
What is your advice to empower women to make time for (guilt-free) rest?
In order to show up the way we want to in the world, we have to first take care of ourselves. Women are so many things to so many people, and often we give from a place of joy – but if you find yourself not wanting to give, it often means you haven't started off by giving that same amount of love and attention to yourself. My advice would be to simply be selfish...we can reframe that word to mean something positive.
Please describe a time when you had to surrender to rest.
Often getting out of balance manifests in a headache that requires me to slow down and surrender to rest. When this happens I often bring myself into a meditative state of rest and quickly know what lead to me being forced to surrender in the first place.
How do you tune into your body's wisdom to know when to rest?
Your body is constantly talking to you with subtle cues. I sometimes ignore and the whisper gets louder. It has helped me to know what my body is asking for and what that looks like. Sometimes it's more water, rest, sunshine, friendship/sisterhood, whole foods, self-pleasure, or just to pick up a book and turn off all the screens. I tune in now, and although my routine is far from perfect, I know when my body is talking and I have learned to work with the wisdom of the body.
